By providing a platform for testing and demonstrating these innovative practices, the model farm plays a vital role in reducing risks associated with adopting new techniques, while also serving as a knowledge-sharing hub for disseminating best practices to coffee producers across Yemen. The insights gained from the model farm's experiments and demonstrations are expected to contribute significantly to the advancement of the Yemeni coffee industry, ultimately improving yields, quality, and overall sustainability.
In 2022, Qima Foundation successfully established a model farm aimed at testing and disseminating production innovations to de-risk and enhance coffee production in Yemen. The model farm serves as a testing ground for various advancements in coffee farming, including variety testing, irrigation methods, densification practices, and rejuvenation techniques.
With a total of 2100 plantlets on the model farm, we are currently running experiments on the following:
Conducting tests on many different Arabica varieties to identify the most suitable ones for local conditions
Identifying and implementing new, cost-effective reservoir and irrigation systems to improve water management and increase sustainability
Introducing an agroforestry demonstration featuring Tun trees to showcase the benefits of integrating trees within the coffee farming landscape.
Implementing an artificial shade system to protect crops from the annual hailstorms often encountered in high-altitude coffee farms.
